Anne Penniman MacLeod Obituary

Anne Lorraine Penniman MacLeod, of Groveland, MA, died peacefully and loved on March 7th, 2018, at the age of 93, in hospice at Beverly Hospital, Beverly, MA.  She died the way she lived: sweet, dignified, and with her two beloved daughters.

Anne was born on September 12, 1924 in Cambridge, MA. Her parents wereArthur L. Pennimanand Marion (Lamprey) Penniman.  She spent most of her childhood in Hampton, NH.  At age 13 she was teaching dancing lessons to many young students and putting on recitals. She was touted as the youngest dancing teacher in NH, at the time. She put herself through the University of New Hampshire, graduating with a BA in English. She moved to Boston, working as the Assistant Fashion Director for Wm. Filenes & Sons.  She ran fashion shows and appeared in live commercials.  At Filene’s she met her future husband, Charles M. MacLeod.  They were married for almost 53 years, when Charles predeceased her in 2002.

Anne and Charles spent the years of 1952-1976 in Wakefield, MA, bringing up their two daughters Suzanne and Stephanie. In 1976, they moved to Boxford, MA, and spent many happy years there, where Anne was a member of the Boxford Garden Club. In 2002, Anne moved to Whitestone Village in Groveland, MA. Surrounded by her family she lived her remaining years contented and loved. Her wonderful home health aides gave her much pleasure, and took great care of her.

She is survived by her daughters, son-in-laws and grandchildren, who adored her and whom she adored: Suzanne MacLeod and Alan Watkins of Georgetown, MA; Stephanie MacLeod and Jim Hankin of Hamilton, MA; Alex MacLeod Hankin and Katie MacLeod Hankin, both of Hamilton, MA. She is also survived by her half-brother and sister and their spouses, and her father’s widow:  Clayton and Chris Penniman of Old Lyme, CT; Melinda (Penniman) and David Carlsen of Gorham, NH; Nancy Penniman of Friendship, ME.  In addition she is survived by a first cousin, 2 nephews, 3 nieces and many grand nieces and nephews.

A remembrance for Anne will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018. A short memorial service will take place at 11:00 AM in the Boxford Village Cemetery (Georgetown Rd., Boxford, MA). At noon, there will be a luncheon buffet to celebrate Anne at the Black Swan Country Club (258 Andover St., Georgetown, MA).
