Catherine Diehl Obituary

Catherine “Marilyn” Diehl passed away peacefully after a long illness on November 23rd, 2024. She was born December 10th, 1938, to William C. Marlette and Mary J. Marlette in Louisville Kentucky. The oldest of 5 siblings, her instinct to take care of others became apparent at an early age. She met her late husband Herman T. Diehl Jr. when he served as a Specialist Third Class in the U.S. Army at Ft. Knox KY. They wed in 1958. Together, they built their lives around the service of others.

For her entire adult life, Marilyn was a nurse – in Louisville Kentucky, in Georgetown, Lawrence, and Salem Massachusetts, and at summer camps in Maine, New Hampshire, and New York, and a resident nurse at Governor's Academy from 1979 to 1991. She dedicated her time to aid those in need and was an extremely active member of her community and church. Retirement did not deter her from assisting others, especially when she and Herm lived at Nichols Village in Groveland. In 2010, she received the Nancy E. Peace Action Against Prejudice Award, honoring individuals who have worked to eliminate racism, fight prejudice, and celebrate diversity. Her compassion touched everyone around her and never wavered, even as her health declined.

In her spare time, Marilyn was an avid reader, gardener, and lover of classical music. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed laughing with her loved ones.

Marilyn is survived by a daughter and two sons, as well as their spouses whom she loved as her own children, two grandsons, two granddaughters, two sisters, countless nieces and nephews, and many boarding school students that came to view her as a mom-away-from-home. A devoted mom, her very last words for her children and grandchildren were “I love you.” Her legacy will live on in all those who show compassion to their fellow man. We love you, Marilyn.
