Charles Miller Obituary

Charles H. (Charlie) Miller passed away September 10, 2025, at the age of 91.  He was born on January 24,1934 in Medford, Massachusetts to Charles V. and Margaret L. (Campbell) Miller.  He is survived by his wife of 69 years Carolee Miller.   He was predeceased by his sister Elma Sawyer and his parents.

Surviving family include a son Geoffrey and his wife Sandee (Nunez) Miller of Palmer Lake and Leadville, Colorado and a son Scott and his wife Daunne (Rogers) Miller of Mount Washington, Massachusetts; grandchildren Caitlin and her husband Matt Scott, Egremont, Massachusetts, Stephen and his wife Elizabeth (Pane) Miller, Andover, Massachusetts and Alexis Miller and her husband Brent Wilkins, Louisville, Colorado; great grandchildren Maise and Julian Scott, Madison, Brooke and Maxwell Miller, Cedar and River Wilkins.

Charlie received a BS and later an MS in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University. He was a captain of the alpine ski team. Charlie travelled to Alaska to assist in cold weather soils research as part of his co-op education at Northeastern. He was a Professional Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor in several New England States.  Upon graduation, Charlie worked briefly at Camp Dresser McKee in Boston but was released during a staff reduction.  One of the firm principals met with him at his exit and offered an introduction to Bill Haley at Haley and Ward.  Charlie interviewed with Mr. Haley that afternoon and was hired to start the following day, but this overlapped with his US Army Reserves two-week training camp.  One of Charlie’s favorite stories, there were many, was how he received three paychecks for this time.  The extra funds were used to pay the medical bills for their first son’s birth.  Charlie went on to become the President and majority owner of Haley and Ward, remaining there until his retirement.

He was a member of the Reserve Officer Training Corps and served in the United States Army Reserves with the rank of Captain.

Charlie served on the Georgetown Planning Board as well as the Essex County 4-H Foundation.  He got involved with horses and 4-H with his sons.  He continued to ride horses through the remainder of his life.  This included extended overnight trail rides throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.  He was a member of the Cross State Trail Riders and the Rowley Riding and Driving Club.  He achieved his goal of riding the Colorado Trail from Denver to Durango, a 567-mile route along a high altitude, mountainous route on his horse.  He completed one of the final segments on foot, backpacking with family members.
