Curtis R. Walton, Sr., 80, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, in hospice at Portsmouth Regional Hospital, after a period of declining health. Curtis was born on June 20, 1945, in Pawtucket, RI, the son of Lt.Col. Curtis R. Walton and Mary F. (Quinn) Walton. Growing up in a career U.S. Army family, he had an adventurous childhood living in Germany for three years and traveling throughout Europe as well as living in a variety of states. His personality blossomed as he made friends everywhere he went.
He graduated from Newburyport High School in 1964, obtained a BS degree from New Hampshire College in 1968, and an MBA from Northeastern University in 1980. His career in business and finance spanned four decades in internal auditing, controllerships, and ending as a CFO in Logistics. His career also allowed him to continue his love of travel as he worked for weeks at a time in Central America, Germany, England, and shorter trips to Puerto Rico, Florida, and Tennessee.
While living in Newbury, MA, he served as a call fire fighter with Protection Fire Company No. 2 of Newbury, was elected to the Newbury Planning Board, and later elected Chairman of the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission.
Throughout his life he enjoyed cooking, amateur archeology, boating, motorcycling, and vacationing at Camp-of-the-Woods in the Adirondacks. He was a faithful and active member of the Byfield Parish Church, serving on the Men’s Ministry Team for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Joan (Egedy) Walton; a son, Curtis R. Walton Jr. (Julie), a granddaughter, Charlotte A. Walton of Merrimac, MA; Stepson Matthew Woolley (Elisabeth) and three step grandchildren—Henry, Gabriel, and Maeve Woolley of Seabrook, NH; and stepson Micah Woolley of Los Angeles, CA.
The visiting hours and funeral service will be on Saturday, February 21, from 12-1:45 PM and 2 PM respectively with a reception following at the Byfield Parish Church, 132 Jackman Street, Georgetown, MA 01833. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Byfield Parish Church Capital Improvement Fund or Missions Fund.
