Diane Mary Prescott passed peacefully in her home on December 10, 2025. A lifelong resident of Georgetown, Diane was born on Baldpate Hill and graduated from Perley High School. As a teen she spent summers in New York City studying ballet. After graduation she traveled and worked in Texas, Florida, and New Jersey before meeting her future husband, Bruce Elmore Prescott, while working at Baldpate Hospital. Diane’s life revolved around family, especially her five children, her animals, and the extended family she and Bruce cared for together. For many years, you could find her cooking her famous spaghetti and meatballs for weekly Wednesday night dinners.
Diane could never say no to a stray in need. A menagerie of animals passed through the Prescott family home and gentlemen’s farm including livestock. Later in life she bred parakeets, canaries and finches. Her green thumb was legendary; flowers, houseplants, and shrubs flourished under her care, filling every room with life and color. Diane was a nurturer by nature.
Diane worked at Georgetown High School and Cressy’s and later found both purpose and friendship through Georgetown’s Council on Aging (COA). She welcomed others to join COA activities, building community and camaraderie wherever she went. Diane’s faith played an important role in her life. She was a Eucharistic minister for many years at St. Mary’s Church and particularly enjoyed being part of the Women’s Group and their annual activities like decorating the “Tea Tables”. She also enjoyed working the polls during election season, relishing the opportunity to reconnect with familiar faces.
Walking was one of Diane’s passions and she could be seen daily powering through one of her many routes around town and up Andover Hill with a canine companion. Folks would joke they could set their watch to her walking patterns. She enjoyed traveling around the country, car rides with Bruce to New England bed and breakfasts and took a few visits across the pond. She delighted in bright colors, fields of flowers and anything that bloomed.
Above all, Diane was most proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She could often be found cheering from the sidelines at sporting events and applauding at recitals. Quick to make friends and loyal in keeping them, Diane will be missed by many—but most deeply by her family, who were the true center of her life.
Diane is predeceased by her husband of over 60 years, Bruce Elmore Prescott of Haverhill, MA; her parents, Sally Gillis and Russell Rutherford; her sister, Mary Beth Walters; and her brother, Russell “Buddy” Rutherford.
She is survived by her children Lisa Law and husband Harry; Lauren Prescott and husband Stephen; Lynne Prescott-Hopping and husband Russell; Bruce “BJ” Prescott, Jr. and wife Maria; and Leah Niska and husband Kurt. She loved celebrating her grandchildren Eric, Meghan, Sara, Zachary, Nathan, Kathryn, Jack, Colin, and Joseph, and cherished great grandchildren Riley and Madison. Diane held a special place in her heart for nieces and nephew Christopher, Melissa, Kimberly, Robin and Samantha, whom she loved deeply.
