Newburyport, MA resident and beloved restaurateur Dorothy Ann Maglio passed away peacefully on April 3, 2025. She was 84 years old.
Born on August 21, 1940, Dorothy was the only child of Anna (O ’ Laughlin) and Fredrick Priem of Dorchester, MA. In 1965, she married Joseph S. Maglio, and together they raised four children in Boxford, MA.
Dorothy was best known for her warmth, hospitality, and entrepreneurial spirit. For 15 years, she owned and operated Dorothy’ s of Georgetown, a cherished local restaurant where she not only served delicious meals—including her signature dish, Chicken Anna, named after her mother, and the crowd-pleasing Steak Dorothy, featuring lobster tail and Béarnaise sauce—but also created lasting memories. One memorable visit came from Barry Williams, famously known as Greg Brady, who dined at Dorothy’ s and left a playful note reminding guests to “never play ball in the house.” As hostess, she greeted every guest with her signature charm and cultivated an inviting ambiance that made all feel welcome. Among her many thoughtful touches, the most popular was the “Barbara Bush Table,” for which she received a kind and gracious note from the former First Lady herself.
In retirement, Dorothy continued to share her generous spirit by volunteering with the American Cancer Society. She dedicated her time to meaningful fundraising initiatives, including Daffodil Days and local walkathons— causes close to her heart—where she also met many lifelong friends.
Dorothy is survived by her four children and their spouses: Joe and Christi Maglio of Newburyport, MA, Stacy Leonard and John Poulack of Amherst NH, Marcy and Christophe Colinet of Kennebunkport, ME, and John and Rae Maglio of Georgetown, MA. She was a devoted and proud grandmother to 13 grandchildren: Max Leonard, Lila Leonard, Chloé Leonard, Ruby Sliwkowski, Ava Maglio, Malia Maglio, Drew Sliwkowski, Carter Leonard, Miami Maglio, Talan Maglio, Marley Maglio, Miley Maglio, and Kaya Maglio.
She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and community, and will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. “Now you go easy out there!”
Family and friends are kindly invited to Dorothy's visitation on Thursday, April 10th from 11am to 1pm, followed by her Funeral Service at 1pm in the Conte - Giamberardino Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant Street, Georgetown. Interment will follow at Mt. Vernon Cemetery, Boxford.
