Ellen Ulfelder Obituary

Ellen Marie (DiSilva) Ulfelder, 58, of West Newbury, passed away Thursday, October 22, 2020 at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family. Born in Lexington, MA Ellen grew up in a close caring circle that included grandparents, many aunts, uncles and dozens of cousins. She, her parents and siblings spent many happy summers on Wells Beach, a place of peace she continued to enjoy throughout her lifetime. She became an educator, taught in the public schools for over 12 years and in 1998 established her own pre-school, Pathways for Learning.
Ellen’s adult life was one of devotion to her husband Dave and her children, Thomas and Annie. A loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, teacher and friend, Ellen never seemed to tire of extending her selfless heart, time and energy to anyone who needed it. Known for her insightful teaching style, “Miss Ellen” was loved equally by her students and their parents. She was an inspiration and mentor to her staff and colleagues. Above all else, Ellen loved children and the way they looked at the world, which brought her tremendous joy. She recently graduated with a master’s certification in homeopathic medicine and launched a second career. The world has certainly been denied a most caring and competent practitioner. Her passions included a love for horses, which she shared with her daughter, Annie and nieces, her legendary pre-sunrise, double spin class workouts, and her famous Starbucks double-digit espresso coffees. Her life has impacted the lives of countless children and all those who were blessed enough to know her in immeasurable ways. Our Miss Ellen, Lala, Peggy Sue, Auntie En; her crocapotamus and her snorkel, will be with us all for a lifetime.
Ellen is survived by her husband of 29 years, David H. Ulfelder, their son Thomas H., and daughter Anita L. her mother, Valerie A. DiSilva of Lexington, MA, brothers Thomas W. DiSilva and his partner Jean of Groveland, MA, Joseph A. DiSilva and his wife Lori of Huntington Beach, CA, and her sister, Annemarie Smith and husband Peter of W. Newbury., She was pre-deceased by her father Thomas A. DiSilva, also of Lexington, MA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who adored their “Auntie Ellen”.
