It is with broken hearts we share the sudden passing of Eric Edward Getchell on Tuesday, August 6, 2024. Although Eric had struggled with the effects of his illness for years, he never let it define him and lived every moment to the fullest. Eric was a wonderful father, husband, son, brother, and friend.
Eric Edward Getchell was born June 30, 1972, in Boston, Massachusetts, the first of two sons of Edward and the late Marjorie (Kalberer) Getchell. Eric grew up in Carlisle, Massachusetts, attended Carlisle schools, and graduated from Concord-Carlisle High School. Eric attended the University of Vermont, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Business. Eric began his career at Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) where he developed many wonderful, life-long friendships. From there he worked throughout the industry and finished his career at Red Hat Software. Eric enjoyed all things technology related and sharing his enthusiasm with others.
His family spent summers vacationing in Annisquam, Massachusetts, off the coast of Port Clyde, Maine, as well as the Portland, Oregon area. It was during these vacations that Eric developed his passion for sailing, boating, and lobstering. While attending the University of Vermont, if he was not in class or the computer lab, you would find him sailing on Lake Champlain or downhill skiing at all of the local resorts. While on the West Coast, you would find him on a hiking trail. Eric found so much enjoyment in sailing, he joined the Ipswich Junior Sailing Board of Directors in 2023. He loved sharing his passion and teaching children and young adults the joy of sailing.
Eric met his wife at the University of Vermont and reconnected years later. They went on to raise their family in Boxford, Massachusetts. They were married for 23 years, and are parents of three wonderful children - Isabelle, Owen, and Charlotte. Eric devoted himself to being a father. He enjoyed raising, teaching, and sharing his love of life with them.
Eric is survived by his beloved wife, Christine, their cherished children, Isabelle, Owen, and Charlotte, his father, Edward Getchell, his brother, Greg Getchell, sister-in-law Kate and nieces Sophie and Natalie Getchell and countless loving family members across New England and the Oregon/Washington state area.
Eric wishes to have his ashes spread in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Port Clyde, Maine, where he spent many summers growing up. Eric was a wonderful person, all of us will miss his friendly-nature, good humor, and his love of enjoying life.
At this time, there are only private plans for the immediate family.
