George Hildebrand Obituary

George Lee Hildebrand, 99, passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023. George was born on June 14, 1924 in Saugus, MA to Lee and Marie (Hahn) Hildebrand. From the age of two, George lived in Marblehead, MA. He graduated from Marblehead High School in 1942. George started his college career at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME before joining the U.S. Army in May 1943. He was stationed at Camp Wolters in Mineral Wells, TX for three months and attended Wayne University in Detroit, MI for six months. George served with the 96 th Infantry Division and was stationed in Oregon, California, Hawaii, the Philippine Islands, and Okinawa prior to his discharge from the Army in October 1945. During his service, he earned two Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. Upon discharge from the Army, George returned to Bowdoin before transferring to MIT in Cambridge, MA where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He graduated with dual degrees from Bowdoin and MIT in June and October 1948, respectively. After graduation, George joined General Electric and spent his entire working career as an engineer.

George married the love of his life, Margery Foss Smith, in 1955. They resided in Marblehead, MA until moving to West Boxford, MA in 1969. George and Margery spent 68 wonderful years together raising their family, traveling, and enjoying their retirement as they traveled throughout the country in their fifth wheel trailer.

George was an avid skier, sailor, and hiker and instilled his love of the mountains and the ocean in his family. His love of the outdoors sprang from time spent at his family’s cabin in the White Mountains. As the family grew, the cabin served as the base camp for many adventures as cousins and siblings gathered to swim, ski, and spend time together. George was a kind and charming man with a sharp wit and an impish sense of humor. He radiated a love of life and family through his wisdom and actions. He was a long-time member of the Second Congregational Church, West Boxford, MA, and served in many volunteer positions for the church and for the Council on Aging over the years.

George leaves behind his beloved wife, Margery, of Boxford, MA; children, Charles Hildebrand and wife Jerrie of Salem, MA; Robert Hildebrand and wife Sarah of Montpelier, VT; Carol Hildebrand and husband Don Eburne of Wellesley, MA; Amy Jones and husband Darrell of Boonsboro, MD; grandchildren, Erica Hildebrand and husband Chris Bennett, Sam Hildebrand and fiancé Emily Messelaar, Tom Brinton and wife Becca, Will Brinton and fiancé Meg O’Hare, Wesley Hildebrand, Abbie Jones, Molly Jones, Olivia Eburne, and Diana Eburne; great- grandchildren, Otto and Lila Brinton; sister, Barbara Nordeen and many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
