Helen Marie (Noel) Leighton

Helen Marie (Noel) Leighton, age 71, residing in Amherst Maine, passed away surrounded by her loved ones on July 24, 2020 after a long and brave battle with cancer. Helen was born on April 7, 1949 and lived in Georgetown MA most of her life, graduating from Georgetown High School in 1967. A 3rd generation “townie” raised in Georgetown, Helen was proud of the term. This is where she made lifelong friends with whom she has remained close after all of these years. Helen held many different jobs around the town, always trying to work her schedule around the three children she was raising. She was the President of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Georgetown VFW Post 7608 for many years and worked hard to improve the lives of our veterans to whom she was passionate about. Helen lived an exciting life full of fun and adventure in her earlier years and during her later years she enjoyed yard sales, gardening, attending blues festivals, motorcycling, shopping and cooking. She loved traveling and visiting her family and friends in Florida, especially BJ Christensen.. Helen was a born nurturer. She was always willing to offer a hand or an opinion and often put her needs and wants last. Among all, the greatest joys of her life were her four granddaughters. Mammie loved them madly and she made a lasting impact on each one of them.
Helen leaves behind her husband Arthur Leighton of Amherst ME, her children Jeanne (Downs) Shea and her husband Tim of Kingston NH, Tamora (Downs) Flynn and Richie Collins of Kingston NH and Jeff Downs of Sandown NH. She also leaves her granddaughters Kelcie, Ryan, Vivian and Eavan. She is also survived by many friends from Maine to Florida most notably, Claire (Rocky) Parino of Georgetown MA with whom she shared a 65+ year friendship. Helen was predeceased by former husband, Roland Trafton, her sister, Patricia Chick and her parents, Katherine and Loyal Noel. She will be greatly missed by all those that knew and loved her. A candlelight gathering will be held in the yard at 16 Sunshine Drive, Kingston NH on August 7, 2020 from 6:30-8pm. Please bring your lawn chair and recognize social distancing.
