Herman T. Diehl, Jr. (Herm) of Groveland died on October 31st, 2022, in Newburyport, MA. The son of Rear Admiral (USCG) Herman T. Diehl and Gertrude Anna Barrowclough, Herm was born on March 11, 1936, on Staten Island, New York. As the son of a Coast Guard officer, he moved frequently, and eventually attended 19 schools by the time he graduated from Garfield High in Seattle, Washington. However, he considered Greenville, Maine as his home, where he and his cousins “grew up and went to different schools together”. Herm was a Specialist Third Class in the U.S. Army at Ft. Knox, KY, when he met Catherine “Marilyn” Marlette, from Louisville, whom he wed in 1958. He graduated from The University of Maine at Orono with a degree in U.S. History and began a teaching career that lasted more than 40 years. He taught high school students in Mechanic Falls, ME, Syracuse, NY, Marblehead, MA, and eventually settled at Pentucket Regional High School in West Newbury, MA, in 1969. At Pentucket he coached various sports, and taught history and social studies until his retirement in 2001.
During the summer months, he served in senior staff positions at a number of boys camps in NH and Maine and umpired for adult softball leagues for many years. He frequently encountered former students in the community and talking with them brought him great joy. He often gave them the sage advice, “Wherever you are, be there”. In addition, Herm was a volunteer firefighter at Erie Fire Association No. 4 in Georgetown, MA and had a great love of fishing, hunting, and his childhood favorite radio show “The Lone Ranger”.
While Herm is remembered by friends and family as a storyteller extraordinaire, he was also a loyal son, a devoted brother of Margaret (Peggy), a loving husband of Marilyn, an adoring father of Thomas Diehl, Michael Diehl, and Elizabeth Lowell, a doting grandfather of Kathryn Lowell, Avery Diehl, Christopher Lowell, and Eric Diehl, and an affectionate father-in-law of Brenna Flaugher, Allison Diehl, and Steve Lowell. He will be remembered by all as a kind and sensitive gentleman, from Maine.
There will be a celebration of Herm’s life held on Friday, November 11, 2022, at the Conte-Giamberardino Funeral Home. 14 Pleasant Street, Georgetown, MA from 5pm to 8pm. As Herm enjoyed dressing as Santa for the holidays, in lieu of flowers please donate to Toys for Tots sponsored by the United States Marines.
