Jane Smith Obituary

Jane Godanj Smith
July 22, 1931 – June 29, 2026

“Bye for now” is how Jane ended every phone call with family and friends. We take comfort in knowing that her passing is only "for now," trusting that one day we will be reunited in that great reunion promised through our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jane was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 22, 1931, to the late Raphael and Jane Socrates.

In 1955, Jane married Ashton G. Smith, and together they raised three children: Amber, Mark, and Carlton. Throughout their marriage, Jane and Ashton were perennial gypsies, moving so often that you could have filled an address book. After her children graduated from high school, Jane pursued several careers, including substitute teaching, retail purchaser at Lexington Gardens, and interior decorator at Checkerberry House.

Jane will be remembered for her larger-than-life personality, unwavering love, warmth, laughter, wit, generous spirit, unforgettable expressions, and remarkable memory. Family and friends can still hear her exclaiming, “Holy mackerel!” “Unbelievable!” or “Jeepers Creepers!” whether in conversation or watching her beloved true crime programs and British stories. She never forgot a birthday, had an uncanny ability to find a bargain for just a few dollars, and possessed a gift for interior decorating. Receiving one of Jane's coveted "gold stars" of approval was worth more than gold.

In her later years, Jane made her home with her daughter, Amber, in Maine, where she was lovingly cared for throughout the final chapter of her life. After celebrating her 90th birthday, she jokingly referred to herself as "ancient." During these years, she especially treasured visits with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Jane is survived by her three children: Amber (Rick), Mark (Jill), and Carlton (Jennifer); her grandchildren, Sarah Townsend (James), John Haywood (India), William Haywood (Jessy), Ariel Kraft (Michael), Arden Aloisio (Daniel), Ashton Smith (Lisa), Christie Smith, Jessica Shade, and Emily Shade; and her great-grandchildren, James and Lily Townsend; Finlay Haywood; Lincoln, Emmaleigh, Jasper, and Liberty Aloisio; Karis, Shannon, Teah, Sean, Thaddeus, and Madyn Kraft; and Shane, Tanner, Chase, Rhett, and Sienna Smith. She also leaves behind many beloved extended family members and dear friends who will miss her deeply.

Family and friends are invited to gather at 10:30 AM to visit with the family before her 11 AM Funeral Service on July 16, 2026, at Conte - Giamberardino Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant Street, Georgetown, Massachusetts. An interment will follow at Harmony Cemetery, 141 Ipswich Rd, Boxford, Massachusetts, where Jane will be laid to rest.
