John G. Bell, Jr.

John G. Bell Jr. of Amesbury passed peacefully in his sleep on May 15 in Newburyport, MA. He was born on June 12, 1929, in Los Angeles, a son of John G Bell and Clarice (Asbridge) Bell. He graduated Pasadena High School in California where he excelled in tennis and was elected president of his senior class. He gave his commencement address at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena. Upon graduating from high school, he attended City College in Los Angeles prior to enlisting in the U.S. Navy. In the Navy he served as a Quartermaster from 1950-1954 and was intensely proud of his time in the service. While serving in the navy he met the love of his life Ann Bernadette O’Donnell.

After his honorable discharge they were married at Star of the Sea church in Salisbury, MA and soon settled in Chicago Illinois where their five children were born. He relocated his family to Byfield in 1967 and made it his home for the next 53 years until moving to Amesbury in 2020. For most of his life he worked in sales which suited his gregarious personality. He loved meeting new people and could strike up a conversation with a stranger and walk away with a new friend 10 minutes later. He loved the New England sports teams and was an avid horseracing fan.

He leaves behind Ann Bernadette Bell his loving wife of 69 years, his son, John G. Bell III and his wife Paula of Otisfield ME, his son, Steven Bell of Amesbury MA, his son, Mark Bell of Amesbury MA, and his daughter, Kathleen Allen and husband Jack of South Paris ME. He is predeceased by his son Michael.

He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren Matthew, Andrew, Thomas, Jake and Caroline and one great granddaughter Grace. There was nothing in life he loved more than spending time with them and making them laugh.

All are invited to share in John's Funeral Mass on Friday morning, May 24th at 11 o'clock in St. Mary's Parish 94 Andover Street, Georgetown.
