John Silva of Newburyport passed away on August 21, 2025 after a short period of declining health. He was born July 30, 1938 in Cambridge, the son of Manuel and Silvana (Santos) Silva.
John spent most of his working career as a union carpenter working out of Teamsters local 33 in Boston. He was an active member of the North End Boat Club In the 60’s and 70’s serving as
Commodore for a few years. He had a love for basketball from his early years starting when he was in 6th grade at Wellington School in Cambridge. He was Captain of the team that placed
second in the district that year. He was a devoted Celtics fan his entire life.
John married young and soon had seven children to raise. He was up to the challenge keeping things together no matter how tough times could get. If you think of life as a card game he always played his cards well. In his early 50’s he began the snowbird life. He spent all the time when he was not working avoiding the New England winters while living in Florida. He soon bought a house in the Daytona area and spent his time split between Florida and Mass. Taking an early retirement to enjoy his empty nests.
John is survived by his daughter, Margaret Eaton and her husband Dave, his son in law, Dave Zinck, his daughter in law, Debbie Silva, his son, Michael Barbour and wife Debbie, and sons, Kenneth and David Barbour. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife Collette Silva, daughter Mary Zinck, son John Silva Jr. son Mark Barbour and granddaughter Trista Zinck.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025 from 10am to 12pm at the Conte-Giamberardino Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant Street, Georgetown, MA 01833. Burial will follow at the Main Street Cemetery in Rowley, Ma.
