Karen Marie Jellow, age 82, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026, at the Kaplan house in Danvers, surrounded by family after a period of declining health. Karen was born in Gloucester on May 14, 1943, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (White) Amero and graduated from Gloucester High School in 1961 and then the Stenography Institute of Boston in 1962. She was a cherished wife, Mom, Nana, sister and friend, and her presence will be deeply missed.
Mrs. Jellow leaves her husband of 61 years, Gordon H. Jellow of Georgetown and Salisbury, daughter, Nadine Marcheterre, and her husband John of Newburyport, son, Timothy Jellow and his wife, Amanda of Georgetown. Karen was predeceased by her daughter, Nicole Jellow and her brother, Joseph Amero. Adoringly known as Nana, Karen was a wonderful grandmother to her four grandchildren, Anna Marcheterre, Julia “Lia” Marcheterre, Brendan Jellow and Kathryn “Katie” Jellow. She will be missed by her brother, Jim Amero and his wife Beverly of Gloucester and her sister, Gemma Flavin and her husband Neil of Gloucester, as well as several nieces and a nephew.
Karen met the love of her life, Gordon, on Long Beach in Gloucester in the Summer of 1962. They lived in Georgetown for most of their 61 years of marriage and rarely spent a night apart. Karen was a passionate crafter, jeweler, dog lover and really loved a winning slot machine. Karen will be remembered for her sassiness, authenticity and honesty. Preparing home cooked meals for her family was Karen’s love language, especially Portuguese sweet bread, Chinese chicken wings, spaghetti sauce, baked beans with linguica and fried dough.
Karen worked in many occupations that ranged from stenographer to school bus driver over the years. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, especially, holidays, birthday celebrations, decorating Christmas cookies, watching theatre performances and field hockey games. The happy couple enjoyed their second home in North Conway and trips to the local casinos. Karen particularly enjoyed going out to lunch with Gordon.
