Karen Young Obituary

Karen Lynne (Rogers) Young, 70, longtime resident of Georgetown MA, died on Saturday, March 27 in the comfort of family.  She was born in Newburyport on January 14, 1951, the daughter of the late Harris Rogers and Virginia (Paine) Rogers. Karen was a graduate of the Georgetown High School class of 1969. She married her high school sweetheart, Warren B. Young, February 12, 1972 and recently celebrated their 49 th wedding anniversary together.

Whether with the Girl Scouts, Sunday School, Youth Groups, Summer Camps, or the 29 years she spent as an educator in the Georgetown School System, she loved working with children. At 50 years old, she returned to school and received her degree in Early Childhood education, of which she was very proud. She was diagnosed with cancer 6 months before retiring as a formal educator focusing on special education. She always found ways of teaching that suited each child.  Karen continued to teach us all about what loving and giving really means, and worked hard to stay positive throughout her cancer treatment. She was an avid walker and enjoyed the outdoors. In her free time, she and Warren were often seen walking, hiking, snowshoeing, or biking many of the area trails. She also enjoyed gardening, scrapbooking, and spending time with friends at dinners, home events, and book club. Everywhere she went, she shared her infectious laugh that could brighten any room and lift any spirits. Most of all, Karen loved her family. She enjoyed many family gatherings, from celebration of birthdays and life events, to many years of camping trips, annual family beach days, and bass fishing trips to her brother’s house in Maine. She especially loved attending her grandchildren’s events.

Karen is survived by her husband of 49 years, Warren B. Young, 4 children and their spouses, and 9 grandchildren; her son Jason D. Young and his wife Melissa and their children Abigail, Hannah, and Chloe of Paxton MA, her daughter Sarah B. (Young) Pesce and her husband Derek and their children Cadynce and Mason of Groveland, MA, her son Jared W. Young and his wife Courtney and their children Summer and Sadie of Georgetown, MA, and son Jonathan A. Young and his wife Sabrina and their children Jonathan Jr. and Kassidy of Townsend, MA.  She is also survived by her older brother David A. Rogers and his wife Jeannine of North Smithfield, RI and Denmark, ME, her younger sister JoEllen Fielding of Driftwood TX, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and an abundance of friends.

Karen and her family wanted to be sure to thank family, friends, and neighbors for their continued prayers and support; to her doctors, caregivers, and hospice support for their continued comforting care; and to the First Congregational Church of Georgetown, where she was a member for 55 years.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 5 th from 4pm to 8pm at the Conte-Giamberardino Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant Street, Georgetown, and a celebration of life will be held at the First Congregational Church of Georgetown at 11am on Tuesday April 6 th and graveside at Noon at the Harmony Cemetery in Georgetown.
