Patricia Ann (Heine) Barlow passed away on September 12, 2022, in Newburyport, Massachusetts of Alzheimer’s disease. She was born August 1, 1935, in Palmer, Massachusetts to Julia Ann (Sharbaugh) Heine and Paul Christian Heine. Pat graduated from Palmer High School in 1953. She was then employed at Better Brushes Company in Palmer, followed by employment at New England Metal Culvert in Palmer and later in White River Junction, Vermont. In 1961 she married Allan Barlow, also of Palmer. They lived in an apartment in Essex Junction, Vermont and Pat went to work in the financial department of General Electric in Burlington, VT where Allan worked as a quality control engineer. Following the birth of their first child, Pat became a full-time homemaker and the Barlow’s bought a farmhouse and acreage near Jericho Center, VT. Within a year, Allan was transferred to Everett, MA and the Barlow’s settled in Georgetown, MA where they raised their family and lived for 54 years.
Pat’s homemaking primarily focused on ensuring her children were prepared for life as it unfolded, making it clear to them from an early age that they would excel in school and attend college. They also all learned how to cook and clean and drive, activities that Pat did not enjoy and was more than happy to have someone else perform. Pat remained a homemaker until her three oldest children graduated college, when she went to work for several years at Henschel Corp. of Newburyport. Quilting and candlepin bowling were Pat’s hobbies, and she was very skilled at both. From the 1970’s through 2016, she made hundreds of quilts and quilted wall hangings, winning acclaim from her family and friends and at professionally judged events for her incredibly compact and precise hand-stitching. She was a long-time member of the Merrimack Valley Quilters Guild. Her candle pin bowling spanned her entire life, only coming to a close recently with her declining health. Her southpaw ball delivery left few pins standing, and those that were left were soon knocked right over as Pat was good at picking up spares. Pat was an avid reader of fiction and was a regular patron of the Georgetown public library. She also watched a lot of sports on TV, including most enthusiastically the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins. Her children and grandchildren could always be assured that when they had a music or a sporting event, mom/grammy would be there to cheer them on. Loudly.
Pat leaves behind her husband of 61 years, Allan Barlow; children and spouses, David Barlow and Kathleen Ahearn of Vermont, Stuart Barlow and Lisa (Fournier) of Vermont, Jonathan Barlow and fiancé Heather Wakefield of Texas, and Avlin (Barlow) Imaeda and Suguru Imaeda of Connecticut; along with seven grandchildren. Pat was predeceased by her parents and five siblings – June (1922 -2013), Helen (1924-2016), Paul (1929-1933), Paula (1933-2016), and Alan (1937-2017).
