Paul Janson died at home in Georgetown, MA on May 29, 2026. He was born in Melrose MA September 30, 1947 to Henry J Janson and Gwendolyn Towner Janson.
He grew up in Danvers, MA and graduated from Boston University with a degree in biomedical engineering. He was awarded his MD from Boston University School of Medicine in 1973. He did his subsequent internal medicine training at the Boston VA Hospital ending as Chief Medical Resident. At that time medical residents were hired to cover emergency departments at night (“moonlighting”) and a love for emergency medicine was born.
Paul married Mary in 1974, and he and his wife practiced general medicine in Whitesburg, KY for several years. In 1987, they returned to the Boston area and adopted two children, Emma and Maria, from Ecuador. He certified in Emergency Medicine and practiced that specialty for the rest of his career.
Paul was known for his humor, generosity, kindness, and creativity. He loved to send small gifts to people.
In addition to being a respected physician and teacher, he was an artist, a musician, and a writer. He truly enjoyed his role as a parent and as a husband and did everything he could to support
family and friends. He enjoyed traveling, especially to visit friends and family. He took great pleasure in assisting the family business, Jeff and Marias Ice Cream.
He loved his wife and children without reserve. He had a special relationship with Jeff Boragine, his son-in-law and enjoyed every minute with Jeff’s extended family.
He was born with myotonic muscular dystrophy and managed its handicaps gracefully, fighting to stay ahead of the disease as much as he could. He had to give up his beloved guitar, but he continued to write music; he managed to paint even when holding a brush was difficult; and he loved writing. Paul was religious and enjoyed reading the bible and other religious texts.
As things became more difficult, he transitioned to on-line church services. After his retirement, he began writing in earnest. He has at least 17 published books in multiple genres: Children’s books (2), nonfiction (5), fiction (7), screen plays (2), humor (2) and short stories (1). He especially enjoyed writing for Emergency Medical News, a monthly online journal, and he entitled his column, “A Life Well Lived.” It was.
Paul was predeceased by his father Henry J Janson, mother (Lillian) Gwendolyn Towner Janson, brother Henry Joseph Janson, brother Kenneth Alan Janson, and daughter Maria Janson Boragine.
Survived by his wife, Mary Buechler Janson, daughter, Emma Elizabeth Janson, and son-in-law, Jeffrey Carl Boragine, sisters-in-law Ruth Buechler, Sarah McGrath and spouse John, Elizabeth Buechler and spouse Tom Sagui, and brother-in-law Peter Buechler and his spouse Francine Long.
His surviving cousins include Wayne Stiles, Susan Oullette Stiles, Douglas Towner, Roderick Towner, and Christopher Stetson. Nieces and nephews and their children.
