Raymond C. Bateman, affectionately known as Ray, of Georgetown, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025, at the age of 90. Born in Boston on August 13, 1935, Ray lived a long and full life devoted to family, community, and the simple joys that brought him happiness.
Ray graduated from Malden High School and began his career in the maintenance department at Massachusetts General Hospital. His talent and dedication led him to serve as Director of Facilities at Central Hospital in Somerville, MA, followed by leadership roles at Carlton-Willard Village and Marriott Hotels. A true craftsman, Ray was both a licensed Master Plumber and a licensed Master Electrician. He proudly served the Town of Georgetown as Water Commissioner for 33 years and as Plumbing Inspector for more than three decades — roles that reflected his deep commitment to his community.
Ray’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Cynthia Bateman; his children, Richard Bateman and his wife Diane of Georgetown, MA, Lawrence Bateman of Gardner, MA, and Cheryl Bateman of Georgetown, MA; and his treasured grandchildren, Adam Bateman and his wife Laura of Sandown, NH, Alexis Bateman of Georgetown, MA, Whitney Fawcett and her husband Chris of Haverhill, MA, and Hayley Bateman of West Newbury, MA. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren Avery and Tyler Bateman of Sandown, NH, and Kendall and Connor Fawcett of Haverhill, MA.
He was predeceased by his siblings Frank Bateman, Elsie Manning, and Audrey Cunningham, and leaves behind his sister-in-law Janet O’Keefe and her husband Joseph of Billerica, MA, along with many loving nieces and nephews.
Ray had an incredible gift for fixing just about anything and took pride in helping others whenever they needed a hand. A devoted Red Sox fan, he especially loved attending Opening Day each year with his dear friend Jim. Ray loved traditions and created many special memories with his family — one of the most beloved being his reading of “The Night Before Christmas” every Christmas Eve, a tradition that brought joy to all generations of the family.
He and Cynthia cherished their time together in retirement, spending winters at LaCasa, their home in Northport, Florida, where they enjoyed the warm weather and lasting friendships they made there. Known for his kindness, good humor, and unwavering love for his family, Ray brought warmth and laughter wherever he went.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Family and friends are kindly invited to Ray's visitation on Monday, November 17th from 11 to 1pm in the Conte - Giamberardino Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant Street, Georgetown, followed by his service in the funeral home at 1 o'clock.
