Groveland - Richard C. Abbott passed away peacefully on November 16, 2021 after a lengthy illness.
Born in Groveland on January 18, 1930 ,he was a graduate of Groveland High School, class of 1948. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Mattibesset and the USS Vulcan. He lived in Groveland his entire life.
Richard worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, owned Lafayette Cleaners in Amesbury, was a salesman for Beatrice Foods, and served as Town Clerk and Tax Collector for the Town of Groveland for over 25 Years. Working for the town was a job that he truly loved as it allowed him to meet and help thousands of people over the years.
He was involved in numerous community activities including; the American Legion, Little League Coaching, Boy Scouts, serving as a volunteer fireman and as a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was an avid sports fan and loved fishing, horses, traveling, meeting people and most importantly being actively involved with his family, especially his three grandchildren.
Richard was pre-deceased by his wife of 65 years Norma, his parents Herbert and Ethel Abbott of Groveland, his brothers Myron Abbott, Donald Abbott and Robert Abbott and his sisters Pauline Hills, Bette Roy and Barbara Bourassa.
He leaves behind his son Richard Abbott and his wife Mary Ann of Newburyport, daughter Laurie Stack and her husband Jeff of Newbury, and three grandchildren, Captain Patrick Abbott and his fiancé Kim of Carlsbad California, Molly Abbott of Chelsea MA and Michael Abbott of Newburyport MA, along with many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation for family will be held on Saturday, November 27th from 10am to 12 noon, followed by his service at noon in the Conte - Giamberardino Funeral Home, 14 Pleasant Street, Georgetown. Interment with Military Honors will be private at the Harmony Cemetery, Georgetown. The family will announce a public Celebration of Life at a later date.
