Stella (Stathopoulos) Agganis, 94, lovingly known as “Yia Yia” to many, of Ferncroft Towers in Danvers, MA, passed away on Sunday February 7, 2021, at The Residence at Pearl Street in Reading, MA. She was the beloved wife of the late William T. Agganis. Stella was born in Lynn, MA on August 21, 1926, daughter of the late Sotirios and Demetra (Vrees) Stathopoulos. A graduate of Lynn public schools, Stella went on to work as a hairdresser, and eventually began a long career with General Electric Aircraft Engine Group. Stella and Billy went on to settle in the house they cherished for close to 40 years on Western Avenue in Lynn, MA, where she always made sure family, friends, and all guests, were warmly welcomed and treated to her famous Greek cuisine.
Stella was very active with the Logganiko Society serving as Secretary and a member of the Board of Directors for many years. Every year, Stella participated in the Logganiko Society Greek Picnic in Ipswich, MA. Throughout the years, Stella and her family looked forward to the picnic and worked to make sure it was a success. Stella was a woman of strong faith and, as such, was a long-time parishioner of St. George Greek Orthodox Church, where she served on the Parish Council. Stella loved and treasured singing in the church choir every Sunday.
Stella’s most cherished times were those she spent with her family, hosting Sunday gatherings and watching her children and grandchildren grow. She will be remembered for her fierce dedication to her family. She is survived by her loving children; Arthur Agganis and wife Jane of Del Ray Beach, FL, Donna Vergados and husband Nicholas of Lowell, MA, George Agganis and wife Diane of Lakewood Ranch, FL formerly of Georgetown, MA. She is also survived by her beloved grandchildren, James and William Agganis, Angela, William, and Marisa Agganis and George Vergados; her treasured great grandchildren, Logan, Mason and Emily Agganis, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Stella is also survived by her sister Christine Geanacopoulos and predeceased by her siblings John Stathopoulos, Judy Giovanis, Georgia Mullen, Bessie Agganis and Louis Stathopoulos. Stella was a “mother” to many in her extended family, Debi Ballas of Georgia, and Harry Agganis of Florida, who she loved as her own. Stella’s family would like to acknowledge those who she loved and cherished as her own family, John Johnson, and TJ Conte.
It is a comfort to all that Stella will be reunited with her beloved late husband, Billy, who hopefully will now have his “fill” of her, forever.
Family and friends may call on Thursday from 9 AM to 10 AM at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 54 South Common Street, Lynn, MA. A funeral service will also be held following at 10 AM on Thursday at St George Greek Orthodox Church. The burial will take place in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn, MA, immediately following the church ceremony.
