Stephanie McGann Obituary

Stephanie Rose (Johnson) McGann passed away on May 14th, 2024, peacefully at home in Georgetown, MA, after a long illness. Stephanie was born in Stoneham, MA, On October 13th, 1958, to Susan E. (Santosuosso) Johnson and Richard Johnson. She grew up in Malden, MA, with her older brother, Richard, and two younger brothers, Dennis and Leroy. Her grandparents, James and Rose (Ruggiero) Santosuosso, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins lived down the street. Stephanie especially loved spending time with her grandfather, James Santosuosso. She also loved being a big sister to her baby brother Leroy, with whom she shared a special bond until his passing in 2021.

Growing up, Stephanie was quiet, intelligent, and yearned to travel. In high school, she participated in a student exchange program where she lived in France. She graduated from Malden High School in 1976 and Regis College in 1980 with a degree in Political Science. Always driven to help others, Stephanie joined the Peace Corps in 1980, which took her to Niger. There, she worked with schoolchildren as an English language teacher until 1982. Once home, Stephanie worked as a network account manager at the Nynex Telephone Co. in Boston.

Stephanie met and fell in love with her future husband of thirty years, Michael McGann, and married in 1994. In 1998, Stephanie and Michael welcomed their only child, Katherine (Kady) Grace McGann. Stephanie dedicated her entire life to her daughter, and from the very start, they formed an extremely tight-knit bond. Soon after Kady's birth, Stephanie began to suffer from health issues and was eventually diagnosed with Dermatomyositis, an autoimmune disease. Not even for a second did Stephanie let her health get in the way of her commitment to her family.

She and Mike always took Kady on trips all over New England- the White Mountains, Canobie Lake Park, the Topsfield Fair, Disneyworld, and many other adventures. Stephanie always encouraged Kady to pursue various passions. She attended every one of Kady's violin and dance lessons, even when feeling sick. No matter what, she would always have a smile on for her family. Before her symptoms advanced, she worked in administration at Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport, MA, and the office of St. Mary's Church in Georgetown, MA.

One of Stephanie's dreams was to take an international trip with Kady, and in 2012, this dream came true. Kady and Stephanie went to Iceland with her best friend Buffie, her brother Leroy, and his wife, Lisa. Another of her dreams was to see her daughter go to college, and she watched Kady graduate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 2020.

Stephanie was a beloved wife, mother, sister, daughter, aunt, cousin, niece, sister-in-law, and friend. She was always a positive source of strength, encouragement, support, and love, and saw the good in everybody. She loved animals, watching the Patriots, playing Scrabble, sending cards to her family and friends, listening to her favorite musician, Bob Dylan, whom she saw live in concert, sitting at the beach, eating fried clams, teaching Kady how to cook, and so much more. She will be dearly missed by many.

She is predeceased by her parents Richard Johnson and Susan (Santosuosso) Johnson, and her brother Leroy Johnson. She is survived by her husband, Michael McGann, and her daughter, Katherine McGann of Georgetown, her brother Richard Johnson and his partner Nancy Weinstein of Revere, brother Dennis Johnson and his wife Cheryl of Methuen, sister Suzanne DiCarlo of Newton, sister-in-law Lisa Lewis of Jamaica Plain, mother-in-law Dorothy McGann of Winchester, sister-in-law Kathleen Benson of Newburyport, sister-in-law Patty McGann and her wife Marianne Stinson of N. Ft. Meyers, FL., sister-in-law Colleen Mulkerin and her husband John Mulkerin of Ipswich, nieces and nephews Megan Grandon, Matthew Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson, Ryan Mulkerin, Kyle Mulkerin, Adrian Bradley, and Rachel Sirkin, the Santosuosso and Linton families, caretaker Michele Mercier of Haverhill, and many other extended family members.
