Thomas L. Hamelin

Tom Hamelin, 70, passed away peacefully on July 20, surrounded by his loving children. The son of Florence and Bud Hamelin, Tom had a rich and fulfilling life, growing up at 101 West Main Street in Georgetown, MA. He often joked about raising the fifth generation of Hamelins in Georgetown. In his youth he became a certified scuba diver, joining the Georgetown dive and rescue team and serving for five years on the Georgetown Fire Department. Tom struggled through ten years of piano lessons that paid off when he played for eight years in Top Priority (a five-piece band), taught piano, and played in the church worship team. He loved the water and had a sailboat, kayak, canoe, rowboat, and an iceboat that he built.

Tom graduated with a BSMET from Wentworth Institute then worked as a mechanical engineer for B&B Engineering, Varian Microwave, Lam Research, Tokyo Electron, and Applied Materials Varian Semiconductor division, earning twelve patents during his career. He enjoyed repairing anything mechanical or electrical including his own vehicles, and he never owned a new vehicle.

Tom served his community as a foster parent with his wife Jill, caring for seven children. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of Georgetown Bank, Conservation Commission, Carleton Home, and Harmony Cemetery Trustees. He also was a Den leader in Pack 51 and Scoutmaster for Troop 51.

Tom is pre-deceased by his dear wife of forty-one years, Jill. He leaves behind his dear children, Travis and his wife Aimee and their children, Zara and River, Jacob and his wife Jessi, Jameson and daughter Sophia, Tricia and her husband Jean-Bernard and their children Ellieana and Layla, and godchildren Cara and Malachi. He also leaves behind his companion and significant other Jeannie.

He loved to spend time with his children and grandchildren, and he enjoyed fishing, rowing, swimming, playing games, reading, or repairing things. Tom read the bible through several times. Then in 2005 he accepted Jesus in his heart and was changed for eternity. His hope was that family and friends would also study the word of God and do the same. In John 3:3 Jesus says “... no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.”

Family and friends are kindly invited to attend Tom and Jill's Graveside Service on Saturday afternoon, August 15th at 2 o'clock in the Harmony Cemetery, Georgetown. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made in Tom’s name to the American Cancer Society.
